Beyond the title: when your career no longer fits who you are
Courage or recklessness? The need for freedom or the inability to conform? Financial security or the risk of inconsistent income? Personal life or professional life?
These are questions I’ve asked myself every time I decided to leave one work system for another. I’ve been through this transition three times.
Each time, it was hard.
But here’s my story, in short.
At 22, a fresh economics graduate, I looked at the future with hope and confidence. It was eight years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and, with it, the collapse of Romania’s communist regime. The economy was transitioning from a centralised market to a free one. Opportunities were everywhere, or so it seemed.
My first job was at Petrom, a large state-owned company. I lasted two years. The work wasn’t complicated, but it was repetitive: feasibility studies, statistics, reports. The salary was decent for a junior, and there were bonuses tied to the company’s financial results. But not much was left over for anything else. And the position had nothing to do with what I’d actually studied, International Economic Relations. Demotivated by the lack of creativity, I looked for a way out: I applied to a German university and was accepted with a scholarship into a master’s programme focused on EU economics, law, and policy.
Two years later, I was back in Romania, working in banking at a German-Romanian joint venture. I stayed three years. Then, without warning, the German bank decided to pull its investment and exit the Romanian market. Just like that, the job no longer existed.
So now what?
After a period of confusion, I decided to have an honest conversation with myself. What do I actually enjoy? What are my ideal working conditions? What kind of schedule do I want?
The answer was simple: I no longer wanted to work for anyone, not the state, not a private company. I wanted to be the one deciding how much, what, and when I work. So I chose a liberal profession. I passed the entry exam for Romania’s Chamber of Auditors, completed three years of internship and sat the certification exam. And there it was: my own firm. I was the managing director. I decided everything.
Except nobody had warned me that entrepreneurship can be harder than being an employee, especially in Romania’s fiscal conditions. It wasn’t the workload that scared me. It was my responsibility towards the people I worked with. My employees had families, children, and perhaps sick parents. Multiple lives depended on that paycheck. Sometimes the weight of that responsibility was overwhelming. Some months, I was the last one to take a salary from my own company.
I spent fourteen years as an entrepreneur. Until one day, overwhelmed by unfair competition, endless tax code changes, bureaucracy, and the sheer weight of responsibility, I noticed it was getting harder and harder to walk into the office. I’d unlock the door, but I couldn’t step through it.
That’s when I understood: I no longer liked what I was doing. The work had become a chore. Beyond the money, it brought me nothing, no growth, no challenge.
Today I’m a freelancer, coach, and team coach. Looking back, every transition taught me something about myself, even when I couldn’t see the lesson at the time.
What did I learn?
That the moment you can’t step through the door isn’t failure. It’s a signal. Your body and mind are telling you that you’re ready for something else, even if you don’t yet know what.
That having an honest conversation with yourself, no excuses, no deflection, is the real first step. Not the business plan, not the updated CV. The conversation with yourself.
That no matter how well you prepare your exit plan, life throws surprises. The pandemic taught me that. But also: once you’ve started down a path and you believe in the value of what you offer, keep walking.
And most importantly: you are not the title on your business card. You are much more than that. And when that title no longer represents you, you have every right to change it.
If something here resonated, if you, too, feel that “this isn’t working anymore” and you’re looking for a space to sort through your thoughts, I can create that space. A safe place, free of judgment, where you can sustain your own process of reflection and find your answers.
Pandemia m-a învățat asta.
